Introduction- Throughout the American Revolution, geography influenced the outcome of most of the battles that were fought. Some historians will say that George Washington and the Americans won this war because they better understood how to use the environment and the geography of the battlefield to their advantage.
Task- Ohio Standards state that students are to use modern and historical maps and other geographic tools to analyze how historic events are shaped by geography. In this assignment you will use information about three battles to create a map of where major battles of the American Revolution were fought and then analyze how geography affected the outcome of each battle.
Process- You will be using the internet to research battles that occurred during the American Revolution to create a booklet, power point or website that focuses on how geography influenced the war. To create your booklet follow the steps listed below.
1- Research the Battle of Long Island (Brooklyn Heights), the Battle of Yorktown, and one battle of your choice.
2-Get a map of where North American Revolutionary War Battles were fought from Mr. Koch. On your map label each of the original colonies and then label battles that your will report on that were won by the British with a RED Star and battles won by the Colonists with a BLUE Star on the map.
3- Find a picture that represents each battle included in your report and then write a caption that explains how the image that you selected represents what occurred in each battle you report on.
4- Write a brief background of what happened in each battle. Be sure to include important people that were involved, where battle was fought, when the battle was fought, and the significance of the battle.
5- Write an analysis that clearly explains the role geography played in each battle's outcome. To do this you should first describe what the geography around the battle site was like. Next you should explain how the geography influenced the fighting and the outcome of the battle.
6- Put all that you have learned into a clearly organized booklet, power point, or website that will be turned in to Mr. Koch by the beginning of class on December 11, 2013
